Just like plenty of other insects, the termite is reproduced thru the laying and hatching of eggs. In contrast to the common male / female dynamic that we, as humans, know, the queen of the termite colony can become impregnated with eggs from multiple colony members just so the society is kept going. Put simply, termites are not monogamous.

At maturity, a queen termite can lay a few thousands of eggs every single day. In some species of termites, the queen will really be ready to add an additional set of ovaries which will produce even more eggs leading to an enlarged stomach with increased fecundity which is the facility to make more eggs and produce more offspring.

Just like humans, queen termites will increase in size to just about 100 the times of her ordinary size. In the time of pregnancy when the female termite is full of eggs, she's effectively immobilized as is expected. What's a little funny about the pregnant queen termite is that while she's immobilized, she should employ the "manpower" of the employee termites to move her. Actually if she wishes to move from one place to another, it can take tons of employee termites simply to move her 1 or 2 inches. The better news for those employee termites is that their reward is a juice that's secreted from the queen's posterior. That is right, they're rewarded with a juice the queen termite gives them to drink which refreshes them and gives them something to anticipate. When termite eggs first hatch, they take the shape of sprites, which at last turn into different members of the termite colony. The biggest part of the termite colony is made of employee termites.

The wingless employee termites are blind and most sure to be found in termite plagued wood. Infantryman termites are sterile, wingless, blind termites whose only purpose is to protect the termite colony. Termite colonies also contain winged reproductives and extra reproductives all of which produce termite eggs. Winged reproductives use their swarm intelligence to swarm to a new location during swarm season, where they lost their wings and pair up to start a new termite colony. Extra reproductives serve as substitutes for the termite king or termite queen should one of them die. Sadly , termite eggs are produced at a worrying rate and 1 or 2 termites can reproduce into hundreds inside one or two days of time. At this point, those termite eggs begin to grow and then begin their eradication on your structures and / or crops.

The common termite, also called the white ant, live in termite colonies that are also ruled by a single queen termite. As the title suggests, the termite queen is the ruler of the colony and looks after the daily operations responsible for the functioning of the colony. She also has the job of proliferation as she has to give birth to around thousand new termites every single day. Unlike a pregnant woman, it does not take nine whole months to give birth for a termite. It only takes a couple of days for a termite queen to be done with all her reproduction responsibilities.

A termite queen is by no way a loyal and faithful mate. Any male who wishes to donate his seed to her is welcome. However, there will always be only one male termite who will be the king of the colony. Once the king has established that he is the ruler, the queen and king will often be found together.

The most spectacular thing the termite queen is capable of is giving birth to thousands of eggs almost every single day. This is why you will never see a single termite alone. Hundred other termites will always accompany it. It hardly takes them any time to accumulate. The queen termite grows to around ten times her original size when she is impregnated. This makes it extremely difficult for her to get around her colony. This is when it is time for the worker termites to do some work.

Whenever the queen termite needs to get around, her worker termites help her to commute. It takes many termites to move the queen even a few inches. These worker termites get rewarded in the end. The queen termite will secrete a liquid from her posterior on which the worker termites can feed in order to replenish themselves once they are done with the tiresome job.

In the entire termite colony, only the queen termite has wings. This is to facilitate her movement when she wishes to move, which is when she is not carrying thousand eggs. Unlike the ants, the termite colonies can have as many termite queens and kings as they wish. Although it sounds contradictory, in reality the king and queen termites are actually bred to fly away and establish another colony of their own. This is the reason why when you find one termite, you find a thousand other termites.

The primary job that the termite queen has is to give birth to thousand other termites in order to spread to form their respective colonies. While this is very disadvantageous for us, for the termites, it is their prime reason for survival.

This video is of the contents of a HomeGuard Termite Monitor that one of our Termite Techs brought in to me last week. (April 2008)

When we opened it, it had thousands of eggs and juvenile termites in it, along with Workers, Soldiers, and Reproductives. It looked like the termites set up a "Nursery" inside our termite monitor, as they subcolonized it.

So here is a close-up look at some juvenile termites interacting with other mature termites.
