Question by Courtney S: What is the most effective way to rid my house of a roach infestation?
I have tried every roach spray and powder on the market and it is getting quite expensive and I am scared on lizards, so geckos are out of the question. I am thinking of trying Rid X. Any other suggestions?

Are my landlords responsible for roach removal if the infestation occured before I moved in?

Question by Tyler J: Are my landlords responsible for roach removal if the infestation occured before I moved in?
I moved into my apartment in November, and I am fairly certain there was a roach problem before I moved in. It is a 3 decker and all the residents of the building are complaining about the roach problem that is pretty evident that we have now. Should I assume that it is not our fault that they are there? Are my landlords responsible for taking care of the issue? If so, where do I find information regarding this?

Sounds like it's not your fault the roaches are there. It seldom is the tenant's fault.

In every state, the landlord is totally responsible for extermination services. Find the applicable state law by going to the library. Ask the reference librarian for the state code, and she will direct you to the index volume. Look at the landlord/tenant section and make copies of the relevant parts. As a tenant you really need to know the law anyway.

Keep your cat away from you. If you have just discovered the existence of fleas and ticks on your cats, then quarantine your cat or cats to one spacific room.

This must be done in order for all cat fleas and ticks to stay in one room, and avoid spreading into the rest of the house. You'll be killing fleas and ticks and don't want new ones jumping off your cat or onto your cat to continue your flea infestation.

Don't worry, soon you'll be able to let your little kitty or adult cat (once it is free of fleas) again into the rest of your home.

If fleas and ticks invade the rest of your home, this will cause a flea infestation and you may need to flea-bomb your home or even call in some flea exterminators to do the job. Rinse and disinfect all your clothes long and well, lest any fleas or ticks be hiding inside of them as often is the case. You may also want to spray your clothes incase the cat's fleas have planted their flea larvae inside of them.

Place teddies or toys after they are dry in an air-tight bag for at least 5 days to 2 weeks.
Repeat steps 1-5 after a couple of days.

When using commercial flea and tick killer sprays or flea powders, make sure to ventilate your home properly and not breath in the poison or get it on your food. Close food containers and once done, clean out surfaces you use for eating or preparing meals from potential flea killer residue.

This is the only way to get rid of the problem. Else, the roaches will multiply and grow. Roaches are capable of surviving on minimal resources. They even survive a house explosion. This could give you an idea how difficult it is to show them the way out of your home. Hence, it is important that you deal with roach infestation issue very seriously. Deal with it as soon as it occurs.

Before you get in to how to deal with roaches, you must remember a few points about them so that you can handle them well:

• Roaches crawl only during night. Therefore, if you are not getting their source you must check out at night

• The areas where roaches occur are normally dark, warm and moist. You must try to keep the corners of your house clean and dry. Roaches breed in wet areas and maximum roach infestation happens near the sink.

• If there are several cracks and crevices in your walls, you must get them repaired at the earliest. Roaches love to stay in cracks and can hide there for days. Hence, it is important that you seal them soon.

• Roaches do not like naphthalene balls. These white balls are effective in keeping the roaches away. Moreover, they emit a good fresh smell in your cabinets, cupboards and drawers.

In case you find roaches, you could take the following steps:

1) Use Sprays: There are sprays available in the market that instantly kills these pests. You can keep a bottle so that whenever you find a bug, just spray on it and the job is over. Take care of the children. Take the spray far from their reach.

2) Bait: If you are uncomfortable with spray due to the smell and its effects on health, you could buy bait. It is as a gel applied at places where roaches frequent. Bait works really well by luring the roaches first. Then the roaches die after consuming them.

3) Home remedy: Make dough with sugar, flour and boric acid. Boric acid kills roaches and sugar attracts them. Flour will make them stick to the balls and thus this is very effective in keeping the roaches away.

4) Exterminators: If all steps to prevent roach infestation fail then you must take professional help to deal with roach problems.
