Question by TheOrange Evil: How do you get rid of fleas in your home and on your cat?
I suspect my kitten has fleas. Not sure when he got the fleas - possibly from his old owner, possibly from the veterinarian's office. Either way, we're going to buy him Advantage tomorrow, but we're still faced with the problem of fleas in the house.

I know about vacuuming thoroughly and washing everything that's not tied down in hot water, but does anyone have a suggestion about a flea bomb or spray that we can use on the furniture and draperies?

If you have any useful tips, I'd appreciate those, too. Thank you.

Yeah, the Advantage will help the cat and also if he never goes outside, he'll be less likely to get them again.

The only way to get them out of carpet and draperies, etc., is to wash them. Before you vacuum sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet because it dries out a lot of bugs. Just sprinkle it all over, leave it for half an hour or so, then vacuum.

Washing your drapes and rugs is the only way to get fleas out, and you have to use a little extra detergent and use as warm of water as they can handle. It's a big pain but it's the only real way to do it. Sprays always miss some!

How can I repel fleas in my home safely?

Question by Purple People Eater: How can I repel fleas in my home safely?
We have a 6 year old boy and 3 cats. We've put flea medication on the cats, but there are still fleas living in the house. I've seen (and caught) a bunch of them. What can I do to make the fleas go away? I suspect they're in our bedsheets because every morning I wake up with more bites. Any home remedies that are child safe? I can't take it much longer!

I understand your dilema...........

Advice i was given (while I worked in nonchemical pest control) is to get tons of table salt (apparently fleas love it and eat it but the iodine kills them) and sprinkle it all over your carpets, mattresses, blankets and any soft surface..........let it sit for 24-48 hours (this will not hurt the kids or the cat unless you let the kids lick the floor icon smile How can I repel fleas in my home safely?
The fleas will die and then vacuum them and change the vacuum bag so any eggs that you vacuumed are gone from the house.
Hope that helped

How do I remove fleas from my home?

Question by dvalleymom11: How do I remove fleas from my home?
We came home from a weekend beach trip and had tons of fleas in the house. I've been able to control them with carpet powders, sprays, vinegar water and vacuuming, however, I can't get rid of all the fleas. The affected animals have been outdoors since our infestation started so no new fleas have come into the house. I've done lots of internet research, but any proven suggestions on how to rid my home of fleas completely?

Answer by BearBear
You could try doing these steps:

1. Quarantine infested pets.

2. Collect bedding, rugs and throws and wash them in soapy water. Soapy water kills the eggs, larvae, pupae and adults. Be careful not to spill eggs or larvae when picking them up. Eggs are usually found with tiny pellets of dried blood that are defecated by the adults and used for food by the larvae - the combination looks like salt and pepper. Really gross salt and pepper.

3. Vacuum everything. upholstered furniture, carpets, cracks in the floor, bare floors, and use the attachments to get in the corners, behind doors, and anywhere else that dust collects. This will pick up most of the eggs, but larvae will latch onto carpet fibers and stick around. After vacuuming, immediately remove the vacuum bag and seal it in a plastic bag. This bag can then be put into the freezer to kill any fleas and be reused later.

4. The remaining larvae can be dealt with by having the carpets professionally steam-cleaned (the steam will kill every stage of flea except eggs). Make sure you warn the cleaners about the fleas and remove infested animals. Alternatively, you can shampoo the carpet with insecticidal carpet shampoo or have a pest control professional apply an infrared heat treatment to the carpet, which kills all stages of flea.

5. If your pet spends much time outside, drench his usual resting areas with lots of soap and water to drown any fleas that may be waiting for his return.

In order to keep fleas from inside your home, you also have to get the fleas off of your pet. (If your pet comes inside) To do that, follow the following steps:

1. Bathe one to two times daily with soap. Insecticidal shampoos are available but are not necessary.

2. Comb daily with a special flea comb designed to drag fleas out of hiding and dispose of any rousted fleas in soapy water. Record daily the number of fleas removed so you can identify any population increase before it becomes a problem. You can also measure flea populations by wearing a special pair of flannel "booties" over your shoes and pants. The fleas get caught in the material and can then be counted, removed and disposed of. These booties can also be used for temporary protection when traveling into a flea infested area.

I hope I could help you with this problem. icon smile How do I remove fleas from my home?

Safe way of getting rid of fleas in the home?

Question by smoogs: Safe way of getting rid of fleas in the home?
Is there any safe (non-toxic) and effective way of getting rid of fleas in the home?

My cat picked up fleas and I cannot seem to be able to eliminate those buggers. I tried giving my cat a flea bath, using Frontline Plus, vacuuming very frequently, and had the yard treated for fleas and other bugs, but the fleas still persist.

Are there any other options for dealing with these pests?

I have been hesitant to use many of the flea chemicals because they are toxic and I have small children in the home.

How To Manage Dog Fleas At Home

Article by Daryl Chapman

Do you own a pet dog? Anxious about fleas? Fret no more. This article is all about dog fleas, its causes, symptoms and certain effective household treatments that you can opt to try to get rid of these ferocious little critters.

Dog flea is very dreadful. Fleas are yucky. It can bring about mild to severe itching and scratching to its host. They are not easy to eliminate. They measure about 1.5 To 3.3 Mm long. They do not have wings. They suck on blood. There are about 2,000 species of fleas, but the most common is the Ctenocephalides felis, also known as the cat flea. This flea generally affects dog breeds.

What Causes Dog Fleas?

Did you know that although your dog stays at home, it can still get fleas? Yes, your pet can get fleas particularly in a hot and humid weather. Since fleas are so miniscule, they can enter small screens or windows. But the most common way of transmission is by means of direct contact with other pets.

Dogs and cats are very likely to be infested with fleas. Tragically, human beings are not spared. When a pet is not at home or is already gone, fleas can plague humans. With no pets in, fleas are in a hunt for a new host and this is when they start to attack humans. They normally bite humans at the waist area, ankles, and armpits.

Symptoms

So, how can you tell if your pet is suffering from fleas? It is simple to identify if a dog is affected with flea. Notice the dog's itching and scratching becoming worse. Then the affected skin of your canine friend may turn red and inflamed as a result of flea bites and the repeated scratching and biting. Also, flea dirt is observable on your pet's skin, on its sheets and bed-dings, or in other areas where your pet frequently hangs out. Flea dirt looks like small dark specks. Flea dirt is a mixture of desiccated blood and flea debris.

To know if your canine friend is affected by fleas, run through your pet's special comb. If you catch tiny black insects finding its way back to your dog's fur then it is confirmed. Your dog is infested with fleas.

Is It Possible To Treat Fleas Indoors?

After confirming that your dog has fleas, do not lengthen your dog's suffering. Do something about these annoying little critters. Following are some of the most conventional household treatments for dog fleas.

Avon Product - Skin So SoftAccording to one research conducted in the University of Florida in Gainesville, this special bath oil, is an exemplary flea repellent product. Simply soak your canine friend in the solution of Avon's Skin So Soft. Your dog will absolutely be relieved in an instant.

RosemaryRosemary has anti-inflammatory effects. It also helps stimulate the growth of hair. With constant scratching and biting, your dog can suffer mild to severe hair loss. Restore your dog's natural hair and use rosemary consistently.

Brewer's YeastThis commercial product is not yet proven on the other hand according to many pet owners this product can help keep fleas away.

For sure, it is heartbreaking to see your dog suffer because of flea plague. Yes, fleas in dogs are very endemic. But there is something that you can do to manage the condition. Follow the tips above and your pet will be relieved from fleas in no time.

Article by Robbie Jones

Many times a common pest to have in an apartment are roaches. These are found many times in what people consider to be lower cost places although a roach problem can actually happen in any house or apartment regardless of how nice the place is. If you do have a roach problem, then you want to get rid of them. Learn some strategies for getting rid of them in your place.

One of the best things is to report the issue to your landlord. Be sure that you have reported the problem in writing as well to show that you have made attempts to actually get the problem resolved. If your landlord does nothing, many times you can report them to your county health board. Having the documentation that you have attempted to get the roach problem taken care of will help your case.

Besides going to your landlord there are some other things that can be done about a roach problem. Many wonder how these get into your apartment in the first place. Many times the roaches were already in the complex before you moved in. As you have had food particles on the floors, the roaches simply came into your place from the wall they were already in.

One thing that can be done is to fog the apartment. This is generally a pretty good strategy. It will work even better if your neighbors choose to do the same things on the same day. The reason is because at times the roaches will escape to an adjacent apartment and will not be eliminated during the fogging. Even better is to have a pest control company come and spray.

Hopefully, these will help you get rid of some of the roach problems that you are experiencing so that you don't have to live with roaches in your apartment.
