Organic Garden with Ants

Ants can be a problem in a garden. They eat beneficial bugs, such as ladybugs. They also help aphids to survive. Ants generally do not harm plants, but may inflict painful stings on humans. If you are growing an organic garden, want to control ants, but do not want to use harmful chemicals and pesticides, you are in luck.

First, consider controlling the number of ants, not getting rid of them all together. Ants can aerate soil, keep wasps away and eat larvae of other insects. Caterpillar control is the best reason to keep at least some of the ants! But, they can sometimes spread diseases from one plant to another, encourage aphids and other unwanted insects to come to your garden, and will sometimes kill certain plants. Carpenter ants are the most harmful to vegetable gardens. Most ants, however, only eat sugary nectar or the excrement of aphids and are not harmful to any plant.

Simply watering daily can keep ant numbers down. It is not effective at getting rid of them completely, but it will make them uncomfortable and can help you avoid a real invasion. Soapy water seems to work well, but may also discourage beneficial insects from making a home in your garden. Almost all bugs are beneficial to your garden, so be selective about what you actually eliminate.

If they are truly bothersome to you, consider planting a barrier of plants that ants cannot stand. Any mint, cloves and lavender are best at repelling ants. Mint will spread and will grow back year after year, sometimes taking over an area. So, if you use mint, you may consider growing it in containers instead of directly in the ground.

There are a host of plants and herbs that can take care of most bothersome insects in your organic garden. Some even add nutrients to the soil and make certain vegetables taste better. For example, chives repel pests that usually attack fruit or tomatoes while improving the flavor of your carrots. Garlic is known to repel more pests than any other plant you could put in your garden. Beets and soybeans add nitrogen and magnesium to the soil. Dispersing onions and garlic through your garden can even keep rabbits from eating your vegetables.

If you actually create a planting chart and do a little research, you can encourage the most beneficial insects, such as bees, centipedes and microscopic nematodes. At the same time, you can repel the more damaging insects simply by strategically placing plants in certain areas. Improve your soil, improve the taste and nutrient content of your vegetables and inspire growth simply by planning out where you want each plant to live.

Growing an organic garden is rewarding, but expect it to be a bit of a challenge. Learning about how plants and insects benefit each other is a great place to start. Consider letting nature take its course for the most part. If ants are your only problem, then you are doing very well! You can allow them to make their tunnels, aerate your soil and pollinate your plants. If you really want to keep them off of certain plants, put ground hot peppers, molasses or double-sided tape around the stalks of certain plants. Keep your hose reel handy for occasional ant population control and your organic garden will be yours again.

Interesting Facts about Ants

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ANTS

1. Like all insects, ants have six legs. Each leg has three joints. The legs of the ant are very strong so they can run very quickly. If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can, he could run as fast as a racehorse. Ants can lift 20 times their own body weight. An ant brain has about 250 000 brain cells. A human brain has 10,000 million so a colony of 40,000 ants has collectively the same size brain as a human.

2. Ants are normally from 2 to 7 mm long, although carpenter ants can stretch to 2 cm, or almost an inch! Ants can be brown, black or red and can have wings or be wingless. They have narrow waists and elbowed antennae.

3. They are called compound eyes. The abdomen of the ant contains two stomachs. One stomach holds the food for itself and second stomach is for food to be shared with other ants. Like all insects, the outside of their body is covered with a hard armour this is called the exoskeleton. Ants have four distinct growing stages, the egg, larva, pupa and the adult. Biologists classify ants as a special group of wasps. (Hymenoptera Formicidae) There are over 10000 known species of ants. Each ant colony has at least one or more queens.

4. Ant colonies consist of males, females and workers. When a colony begins to grow too large, winged male and female ants leave the colony, mate in flight and then search for a new nesting site, usually in soil, under concrete, or in rotting stumps and wood. Once they find a good site for their new home, they shed their wings and the male soon dies. When the nest has been established, the "queen" lays eggs that hatch into grubs, that pupate into wingless workers. ( Ants go through complete metamorphosis - egg, larva, pupa and adult ) These workers care for the new eggs produced by the queen. Incubation, or hatching of the eggs, lasts from 10 days to several months depending on temperature. Larger ants, called soldiers, are produced for defense and usually have large strong jaws used to protect the colony.

5. The common Black Ants and Wood Ants have no sting, but they can squirt a spray of formic acid. Some birds put ants in their feathers because the ants squirt formic acid which gets rid of the parasites. The Slave-Maker Ant (Polyergus Rufescens) raids the nests of other ants and steals their pupae. When these new ants hatch, they work as slaves within the colony. The worker ants keep the eggs and larvae in different groups according to ages..

6. Ants have colonized almost every landmass on Earth. They can constitute up to 15% of the total animal biomass of a tropical rainforest; in the Amazon the combined weight of the ants is said to be four times larger than that of the tetrapods in the same area. It has also been estimated that the combined weight of all ants exceeds the weight of mankind.

Understanding Carpenter Ants

Easily one of the largest ants that you can find in the United States, carpenter ants are well known to invade homes and buildings and cause damages to them.

There are many different types of carpenter ants, but, the most common is the black carpenter ants. It is about one-half inch or more in length and shiny black; whereas, the other kinds of carpenter ants are usually as small as one-quarter inch and are reddish brown or two-toned. However,  one consistent characteristic of all carpenter ants is the smoothly rounded outline of the thorax when viewed from the side.

Carpenter ants can take many types of food. They can eat honeydew from aphids, sweets, meat, fats as well as living and dead insects. Many people thought that they eat wood as well since they hollow and damage it, but, in reality, they don't eat wood. They damage the wood as they want to nest beneath it.

Nests are made by chewing an interconnecting series of tunnels and cavities. Wood is removed as coarse sawdust-like material that is pushed from the nest. The sawdust may include other debris such as dead ants, parts of insects and other food.

Carpenter ants found indoors in the winter usually come from nests somewhere within the house. Ants found indoors during spring or summer could be invaders wandering in from outdoors or they may be foragers from a nest in the wall or ceiling.

Locating the source of carpenter ants is as important as it is difficult. It is especially difficult if only a few ants are seen at one time. It is good that you spend time observing ants to see if you can detect a pattern of movement and trace back to their nest.

Quite an significant amount of time may be needed observing the carpenter ants, but, it is necessary as any delay may lengthen the potential damages to your home.

Get Rid of Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants can be a huge pain in the butt.  Unfortunately, this pain is unavoidable. However, there are steps you can take to get rid of these little buggers, and home remedies for carpenter ants are the first step in getting the problem under control.

What is a carpenter ant?  A carpenter ant is a black ant that can range anywhere from 1/4- 1 inch in size.  Contrary to popular belief, this ant does not eat wood, rather they carve tunnels in wood.  An easy way to recognize damage from carpenter ants is if you have small piles of sawdust.

Another way to determine you may have a carpenter ant problem or you may be at risk for one, is if you see flying ants inside the home.  Chances are they are looking for a new place to build a nest.

If you have a nest in your home, you will not see many ants at once.  If you see an ant, try to watch where he is headed- chances are he's either leaving the nest, or going back to it.

Similar to termites, Carpenter ants can cause much damage to the structure of your home if they are building nests inside the wood frames.  Once damage is done, the repairs can be very expensive, if not unreversibl, so it's a good idea to treat the problem as soon as you think you may have an infestation.

The best way to get rid of them is by treating the nest first.  Spraying with pesticide is the first step you should do.  There are many home remedies you can try such as boric acid and such, but if this does not solve the problem, you may need to call out a professional exterminator.
