Question by bambee517: What is the name of a short story about a roach that is found in a peach?
I read a short story years ago about a little girl who is spending a day with her father and finds a roach (or some other type of insect) in a piece of fruit, possibly a peach. She is told by the father that the insect has a name, and the father tells her to treat the insect kindly. The name of the story is the name the man gives the insect, I think, and I seem to remember it was originally French. Has anyone heard of this story?

Question by Kate: How can I tell if the apartment I'm about to rent has a roach problem?
I'm moving to Northern Virginia in a week or two and will be looking at apartments. Besides actually spotting roaches, are there any warning signs there is a roach problem? Will my chances of having roaches be less if I live in a high-rise? How else, besides cleaning obviously, can I avoid roach infestation?

Best answer:

Answer by someone
Before moving into a new apartment, always get it pest controlled. High rise or not, if any part of the building is infested, you are sure to have roach problems. To ensure there are no roaches, visit the apartment at midnight and silently enter the kitchen or bathroom!

Question by stan_cheek: Does anybody know anything about natural pest control for tomato's?

Best answer:

Answer by prosopopoeia
1) Soapy water. 2) Take tomato plant vegetation and boil it in water, then use that water as a spray (after cooling, of course). 3) For rabbits, you might try old style marigolds. Otherwise, my recommendation would be to keep the plants well watered and fertilized. You will get more tomatoes than any pests could take you out of (except possibly deer).

It's an all-too-common problem for parents and getting rid of them can prove a difficult task. It can become an infestation, if missed and not diagnosed properly. It's called head lice – a problem that can plague any community or family. Fortunately, effective treatments and preventative measures exist for head lice.

Head Lice 101

Parasitic insects that live in the hair and scalp of humans cause pediculosis, commonly known as a head lice infestation. Women and girls tend to get head lice more often than men and boys. School-aged children represent the most susceptible population to this common condition.

Head lice develop in three stages – nits, nymphs and adults.

People often mistake nits, or head lice eggs, for dandruff or hairspray droplets. These yellow or white, oval-shaped eggs firmly attach to the hair shaft.

Nits hatch into nymphs -- immature adult head lice. Nymphs mature roughly seven days after hatching. They feed on human blood.

About the size of a sesame seed, an adult head louse has six legs and a tan to grayish- white color. To survive, adult lice must feed on human blood. If a louse falls off a person, it dies in approximately two days.

Where to Find Head Lice

Not only annoying, head lice tend to spread like wildfire. Head lice infestations occur worldwide and across all socio-economic lines. Head lice only live on humans; therefore, your family dog cannot contribute to the infestation.

Here are a few ways your child may contract a head lice infestation:

Contact with another child who has head lice. This can occur on school buses and in classrooms where children sit close together or in groups.
Sharing head lice-infested clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms or hair ribbons.
Using infested combs, brushes or towels
Laying on a bed, sofa, pillow, carpet or stuffed animal infested with head lice or nits.

Diagnosing Head Lice

Look closely at your child's hair and scalp to easily detect nits. They often appear "glued" to the hair shaft and do not glide down the hair strands or come off easily.

You may find it a bit more difficult to spot nymphs and adults, as they can move quickly from searching fingers. If you do see them, finding nits close to the scalp confirms infestation.

When not sure whether an infestation exists, a pediatrician, school nurse, or agricultural extension service worker should make the diagnosis.

Avoiding Head Lice

Taking steps to prevent infestation in the first place can save parents much frustration, work, and time. Consider these tips when faced with the possibility of a head lice infestation.

Examine your children for lice periodically and teach them not to share hairbrushes and combs or hats.
Frequently examining the scalps of your school-age child may help you discover and treat lice before they spread to the rest of your family. Avoiding prolonged close contact with a people who have head lice also reduces your risk.

Treating Head Lice

Pediatric physicians often advise treating the entire family as well as the infested child to prevent transmission to other family members. Use an over-the-counter or prescription lice-killing medication. Keep in mind that all lice-killing products contain pesticides. Follow these simple steps to rid your household of head lice:

Remove all clothing.
Apply lice-killing medicine, according to label instructions. If the affected person has extra-long hair, you may need a second bottle. (Do not use a cream rinse or combination shampoo/conditioner before using lice-killing medicine. Do not re-wash hair for 1-2 days after treatment.)
Have the affected person put on clean clothing after treatment.
Remove nits and lice from the hair shaft using a nit comb, often found in lice-killing medicine packages. You can also use flea removal combs designed for cats and dogs.
After treatment, check, comb and remove nits and lice from the hair every two or three days. Re-treat your child in one week.
Machine-wash all washable clothing and bed linens the infected child touched during the time before diagnosis and treatment. Wash clothes and bed linens in hot water and dry items on the hot cycle for at least 20 minutes.
Place non-washable items, such as stuffed animals and comforters in a plastic bag for two weeks or spray with insecticide included in the lice removal kit.
Soak hair brushes and combs for one hour in rubbing alcohol or a disinfectant liquid. Washing with soap and hot water also works.
Vacuum the floor and furniture, making sure not to use lice spray when doing so. Inhaling these sprays can cause toxic effects.
Consult with a professional at your pediatric clinic before using lice-killing products if your child has allergies, asthma or any other chronic medical condition.

Remember – anyone can get head lice. Take extra precautions to ensure your child receives effective treatments if he becomes infested. If you think your child is suffering from a case of head lice and it has not gone away in one or two weeks, call your child's pediatrician. If left untreated, you child may develop a painful scalp rash or infection.

Summer is here! After sense isolated during the long frost months, summer is a flavor that brings us a renewed connection with one another and Nature. Summer is a time for picnics! Picnics come in all shapes and sizes, from small gatherings around a picnic basket crammed with goodies to mammoth village and civic actions. Yet, no affair the bulk of the picnic, one thing is always the same; yes, I mean ants! A picnics is what educators submit to as an assured place experience, a unique opportunity to explore and unite to one another and to Nature. Is this why picnics are so prevalent? Would it be a picnic lacking ants?

When we explore Nature, we detect that the impassive, vegetative, and live levels of Nature are all driven by instinct. Ants are a great examples of this; ants party insects that live and work together in harmony. Ants work together in colonies to worry, feed and educate younger ants, to transfer out shared forecast, junk disposal, engineering, rural, cultivating, and foraging food from our picnics! Watching ants, we discern that somehow, their actions exist to grasp a broad make that operates and sustains this demolish of makeup in harmony. What is this oblige? And what can we learn from it?

The Single Force "This is an altruistic strength that impels all parts of Nature to exist as organs in a separate body, in compare, and in harmony." Michael Laitman PhD, "From Chaos to Harmony"

The wisdom of Kabbalah explains that the precise influence of Nature aspires to bring everything into stability. To sustain this assess, everything in Nature operates as part of a distinct interconnected, comprehensive structure. It is relaxed to see this in the ant colony. An ant separated from the colony would not survive for long. It is not meant to exist as an individual. Instead, each ant fulfills a specific function in the colony. With each ant's contribution, the colony stays biting and, as a full, the ants in it flourish.

In an analogous way, all other parts of Nature function under an altruistic policy: take only what is vital for survival, and everything besides is for the promote of the structure. This is not a conscious scale by plants and animals, but is an inherent part of their attribute. Individual animals might appear to act only in character attention, but close examination shows that in liability so, they help strengthen the entire organism.

Man is the only part of concept that operates slim of this interconnected organism. We conduct under an egoistic policy: how can I get the most quantity of pleasure for the least amount of attempt? This is the differing of the song press of Nature that the Kabbalists tell us about. This is why almost everything we do seem to disturb the surplus of Nature. Nature, however, seeks to bring humanity into tally. The Kabbalists tell us that this is the cause of all the sufferings we see around us.

Until we become related to Nature's release impose of humanity, we will stay to experience this press as a downbeat make on us. Everything exists and occurs for humanity, to help us form the right connection between ourselves and acquire Nature's attribute of altruism. If we want to sojourn suspicion the altruistic energy of Nature as a setback against us, we must know our own egoistic Nature and learn the approach of correcting it.

Would it be a picnic without ants? Picnics are a confirmed place experience to concede our opposition to the altruistic weight of Nature. Perhaps this is why a picnic is clear both, as a meal full outside to be eaten and as a pleasing experience. The Kabbalists tell us that we can originate our course of arrogant Nature's qualities of altruism by imitating Nature. By imitating Nature's qualities of loving and giving, making an effort to treatment for others, and bonding with them with the recognition that all are part of a single body, we will open to think that there is totality in Nature's quality. Through our labors in imitating Nature, we will unearth that an altruistic posture towards others is a cause of refine absolute pleasure, and this will lead us to want to catch this turn of altruism in our personal qualities.

"In this mode, we will levitate from the equal we were fashioned in, to a superior stage, the level of Nature's force itself. We will be integrated in its harmony and perfection. This is where Nature's evolutionary law is primary humanity." - From Chaos to Harmony

I have always had a fascination with ants, and though I have never owned an ant kit, I have longed for one for many existence! I am most jealous thus, of those children whose parents have purchased one of these kits. In folder you retreat't come across an ant kit, it is mainly two tall pieces of transparent plastic fixed together so that they are very close, but not rather touching, and then sealed all spherical the edges. This stands vertically upright, and is filled with soil, smooth or other compound provided. Ants are then inserted or free into this set up, and are then able to make it their home. As long as ample of water and correct food is provided, they will endure entirely well, and ascertain to be a fascinating world to remark.

Ants have a very great compact in usual with us as people, think it or not. They are incredibly common animals, with very plainly clear job roles, such as employee ants, guards, food preparation experts, builders and so on. They even grow with other animals! They have been known to snare and keep other insects, and nourish them to keep them animated and vigorous, milking them for expedient harvest, in much the same way as we ourselves do. They are brilliant builders, and are admirable at solving evils by with their lineup skills. It has often been said that a record ant is fairly rubbish, and will die very abruptly, but together, a totality colony acts like a specific mortal, with remarkable intelligence and understanding. The combatant ants have such gigantic tools on their limbs which they use for fighting, that they can't actually supply themselves. Worker ants will tedium food up, and feed the warrior ants to keep them living - a complete example of how a body would work, with each part running to keep the place of the body alive and running.

Because of the transparent plastic the ants will be almost always observable, and the tunnels that they dig through the soil, sand or whatever is worn will permit you to examine how they makeup their home, with storage areas for food, routes to the outward, plus blind alleys and silent trimmings to baffle any covert-be intruders. If a large gap is twisted, forcing ants to try to oppose it to touch food, then it is also fascinating to sentinel how they investigate the glitch, how they communicate with each other to get a group together, and how they supervise to conduit the gap. This could be by bringing property to shape a link, or even using each other as a passage. It has been seen in the stormy that sometimes hundreds of ants bond together to produce a channel out of their own bodies in order to frustrate a gap, such as a barrage. This is a feat rarely seen in kind, with so many undo creatures all working together to achieve a goal.

Apart from the coaching it will school children about how to reverence nature, and that even the minimum of creatures can demonstrate remarkable skills, it might also train children a helpful lecture in players work.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ANTS

1. Like all insects, ants have six legs. Each leg has three joints. The legs of the ant are very strong so they can run very quickly. If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can, he could run as fast as a racehorse. Ants can lift 20 times their own body weight. An ant brain has about 250 000 brain cells. A human brain has 10,000 million so a colony of 40,000 ants has collectively the same size brain as a human.

2. Ants are normally from 2 to 7 mm long, although carpenter ants can stretch to 2 cm, or almost an inch! Ants can be brown, black or red and can have wings or be wingless. They have narrow waists and elbowed antennae.

3. They are called compound eyes. The abdomen of the ant contains two stomachs. One stomach holds the food for itself and second stomach is for food to be shared with other ants. Like all insects, the outside of their body is covered with a hard armour this is called the exoskeleton. Ants have four distinct growing stages, the egg, larva, pupa and the adult. Biologists classify ants as a special group of wasps. (Hymenoptera Formicidae) There are over 10000 known species of ants. Each ant colony has at least one or more queens.

4. Ant colonies consist of males, females and workers. When a colony begins to grow too large, winged male and female ants leave the colony, mate in flight and then search for a new nesting site, usually in soil, under concrete, or in rotting stumps and wood. Once they find a good site for their new home, they shed their wings and the male soon dies. When the nest has been established, the "queen" lays eggs that hatch into grubs, that pupate into wingless workers. ( Ants go through complete metamorphosis - egg, larva, pupa and adult ) These workers care for the new eggs produced by the queen. Incubation, or hatching of the eggs, lasts from 10 days to several months depending on temperature. Larger ants, called soldiers, are produced for defense and usually have large strong jaws used to protect the colony.

5. The common Black Ants and Wood Ants have no sting, but they can squirt a spray of formic acid. Some birds put ants in their feathers because the ants squirt formic acid which gets rid of the parasites. The Slave-Maker Ant (Polyergus Rufescens) raids the nests of other ants and steals their pupae. When these new ants hatch, they work as slaves within the colony. The worker ants keep the eggs and larvae in different groups according to ages..

6. Ants have colonized almost every landmass on Earth. They can constitute up to 15% of the total animal biomass of a tropical rainforest; in the Amazon the combined weight of the ants is said to be four times larger than that of the tetrapods in the same area. It has also been estimated that the combined weight of all ants exceeds the weight of mankind.
