How do I get rid of pigeons nesting on my roof?
Pigeons are making a huge mess outside of my home and it's unsanitary, how can I get the pigeons to leave and return?
There are these roosting strips you can buy at the hardware store. They use them on the billboards in LA to discourage the pigeons from landing on the tops and messing up the signs. They are strips of metal with metal dowels sticking up that you screw into the area you don't want them roosting. I had this problem at my rentals and used twirly-bops (the kind you see in gardens that are like pinwheels on a stick) to get rid of the pigeons. Looked really funny, but it worked. We stapled some along the facia where they were pooping down the side of the building. And, we put some on wooden sticks attaching them sideways to the toilet vent pipes. After about 3 months they stopped roosting up there permanently and we felt safe enough to take them down.

my parents had this problem, they were nesting in the space where the house and the roof meet. they tried everything and the only thing that worked was tying (or stapling) pieces of silver tinsel to the house and the roof. the breeze would make it move and the sun would make it shiny. the birds were afraid of it, so they didnt nest there anymore. also, the neighbors next to them put up a fake owl, (owls prey on smaller birds, so the birds would fly the other way!) and they would move it every couple of weeks.
if it gets really bad, you can get them exterminated, but i wouldnt wanna do that!!
they do a lot of damage though.
good luck with that!!!

I happen to be a bird lover, so this is a difficult question to address for me, because I am trying to think of the most humane way to try and solve your problem.
First you may want to make sure there is not some food around the outside perimeter of your house that is attracting them to migrate there. Perhaps, if you own a dog or cat, they may be going for their left over food. So, be careful not to have an abundance of scraps of food outside for this reason. If you have a large property, and perhaps water a lot, they may be feasting off the worms they catch in the grass and gutter, right after a good soaking or rainfall.
If you ever notice, for instance, pigeons love to hang around fast food restaurants because people either keep feeding them or morsals of food drop on the ground, such as french fries, and there’s then always a source of food for them. So the pigeons figure, why migrate somewhere else, when they can get basically breakfast, lunch and dinner right there!
This may also be their mating season, being Springtime in some parts of the world. They may be congregating on your roof perhaps searching for or making nests. You just may have the perfect spot for them.
I know it must be very annoying and messy. You may want to talk to a bird store in your area and ask if they have any suggestions that would of course be humane.
I wish you good luck with yoour situation.
