Pigeons Archives

My mother and her neighbor have been inundated with pigeons! They've tried chicken wire AND a fake owl. Nothing seems to work! They just move to a different area of the roof and fly back and forth between the houses. Pest control is stating that it will be no less that 450 dollars to get rid of the pigeons. There are between 6-20 pigeons at any given time. Is there any safe way to be rid of them? There are many laws here prohibiting harm to wildlife. We tried calling the fish and game and regional wildlife reserve and we were told that we must have done something to attract them there. My mother and her neighbor have done absolutely nothing to attract these pests! They just showed up and seem to be attracting more and more pigeons! PLEASE help!

Have the birds been able to get into the attic or into some other sheltered area for nesting. They like to roost in a covered location like lofts, steeples, vents, and under eaves. They shelter like this to avoid owls and falcons that hunt pigeons on wing from overhead. If you can find where they are roosting at night you can put wire mesh up blocking access until they leave. Or drape an area with bird netting whatever seems easiest to block the birds.
To get them off the roof is harder. If they nest elswhere but come in they must be foraging for food nearby. Try using Bird Proof to repel them. Meanwhile see if you can find where they are foraging for grain or seeds. Removing their food source will drive them away also.

Small pigeons on house parapets are a nuisance. I want to get rid of them, not kill them. Please suggest some remedy.

When I lived in Houston, I had occasion to be at the Federal Courthouse and noticed rubber snakes in the ledges of the windows of the building. When asking someone why, I was told that pigeons were a tremendous problem and that they had placed them there for years as a deterent. I tried this on one side of our house at one time when a male bird kept attacking his reflection in the window and it seemed to work pretty good. He kept his distance and just flapped and squawked at himself then finally left it alone.

I heard somewhere that CDs tied to a bush would scare them away - anyone had any luck with that?

Go along to your local garden centre and buy a couple of owls - ceramic, stone or whatever. Put them in your garden in prominent places to scare away the pigeons.

My neighbors have let some pigeons nest and lay eggs in front of their front door (which is directly across from my front door because I'm in a condo). They are even feeding the pigeons. We get attacked by the pigeons flying around every time we step out our front door. How do you recommend getting rid of them. I've thought about asking my neighbor to move the nest to their back porch - will the pigeons find the nest if it is moved?

If the pigeons are actually attacking you, they have young in the nest. They won't actually hurt you, you know.
Talk to the neighbors and ask if, after the chicks are fledged, they will remove the nest and fix it so the pigeons can't nest in that spot again.
Meanwhile, enjoy watching the birds; they will fledge soon enough.
I had a pigeon and a dove that produced a chick; the mother, the dove, died and the father pigeon had to finish raising his son alone; the affection he had for his son was really entertaining.

I have bird feeders and love to watch all the birds. I don't mind pigeons, but they scare the hummingbirds away. The pigeons also seem to be multiplying. I have fed birds for years, this is the first time I've had pigeon problems.
Can anyone help?

Pigeons deserve to be fed just like the other birds, they don't aim to scare the smaller birds, they would not harm them.

I think if you try putting seed on a tray on the ground you'll find the pigeon prefer eating from there opposed to the feeders, if you slowly move this away from the feeders say 1m a day then the smaller birds are free to eat with no fear and the pigeons are still getting fed.

While it's fun to feed pigeons at parks and courtyards, pigeons and similar pest birds can create all sorts of problems. They cause millions of dollars in damage to buildings, facades and mechanical structures--like air conditioning units, telephone, electrical and lighting systems. Pigeons can also create a health hazard. Because their poop, besides being corrosive, can carry any of 60 known diseases.

Fortunately, man has devised all sorts of clever pigeon and pest-bird deterrents. And unlike the days of old when property owners used poisons or shotguns to cull down pest bird populations, today's methods are far more humane. One way to discourage pest birds from "taking over" an area is to exploit their natural fear of predators. And few predators are as despised among pigeons and most pest birds as the Red-tail Hawk.

All the more reason why a Red-tail Hawk decoy can be particularly effective in ridding an area of pest birds. Pigeons instinctively recognize the aerial outline of this highly skilled hunter. Armed with razor sharp talons and eyesight eight times as acute as a human's, a Red Tail can dive after its prey at up to120 miles per hour (they can spot a pigeon from 150 feet above the ground and snatch birds right out of the sky).

Plastic Spikes PR Hawk Decoys Scare Away Pigeons and Pest BirdsA medium-sized bird of prey, the Red-tail Hawk is the most widespread and common member of the American family of large soaring hawks. It's also one of the largest hawks, typically weighing between 2 and 4 pounds. The female is nearly 33 percent larger than the male and may have a wingspan as wide as 56 inches. These birds prefer to soar at high altitudes using their sharp eyesight to zero in on their prey below. An aggressive hawk, the Red Tail will tenaciously fight to defend its territory. All of which is bad news for any pigeons and pest birds that dare to invade the Red Tail's space.

Pigeons and similar pest birds will quickly recognize the Red-tail Hawk for it can be found in a wide range of habitats and altitudes. This includes deserts, marsh-shrubs, grasslands, coniferous and deciduous forests, agricultural fields, and even urban areas. It is a very adaptable bird, equally at home in varying heights above sea level, and capable of breeding throughout much of North America-from western Alaska and northern Canada all the way down to Panama. Red Tails can also be found in cities, perched along highways on utility poles and other lofty structures. So pigeons and other pest birds will always be on the lookout for this highly skilled predator.

Once you've purchased a Red-tail Hawk decoy, correct positioning is essential for maximum effectiveness. That's because hawk decoys rely on their outline in the sky and the shadow of their body and wings on the ground to be instantly recognized by pigeons and pest birds. For this reason, hawk decoys should be suspended as high as possible above a pest bird's area for maximum threat posture. This can be accomplished using a suitable pole, open tree branch or other extension above the problem area. The decoys should also be moved around at least once a week, otherwise pest birds would grow accustomed to them and no longer regard them as a threat. Also, when purchasing a hawk decoy, opt for one that is made of durable weather-resistant plastic. One other tip: the overall effectiveness of a hawk decoy can be magnified when used in conjunction with ultrasonic or audio deterrents. So it pays to talk to a pro about which deterrents to use with any particular type of pest bird.

Pigeon Control

Pigeons Pigeon Control

While it is TRUE that pigeons are often very common many parks and walkways, they can actually generate a decent amount of damage given the opportunity to make a permanent home in a given area. In that they're largely dependent on humans for roosting and nesting sites as well as their food, without even realizing it, we often preserve their presence.

Not only can pigeon feces cause building degeneration and upkeep complications, pigeons are known to transmit and harbor parasites and diseases to both livestock and people because of their droppings. Among common pigeon diseases are salmonella food poisoning, ornithosis, encephalitis, cryptococcosis, and toxoplasmosis Newcastle disease. Structures that are inhabited by pigeons not only sustain destruction and damage from feces, but can additionally harbor parasites and diseases.

Pigeon control can be difficult. Convincing pigeons to remove themselves from an area once they've created a nest is extremely particularly difficult to do without seeking well qualified professional help. Once pigeons decide to make a home in a location, it is even more difficult to discourage them from coming back. In cases like these, it's important for people to get the correct information and that the right procedures be used for pigeon roost removal from chimneys, roofs and attics.

pigeons in a feeding frenzy Pigeon Control

Although pigeons are a popular part of many city parks, they can cause a great deal of damage and destruction if given the chance to make a permanent nest. Pigeon feces will not only stain, but also increase the declination of structures where they roost. The presence of pigeons will raise the cost of maintenance, and a lot of pigeon droppings will often damage and kill vegetation, make foul odors, and get aesthetically troublesome when left unchecked on sidewalks, statues and park benches.

Though they are frequently seen around farms, feed mills and grain elevators, pigeons are predominant in parks and walk ways, on the roofs of buildings, on bridges, and various other structures. Despite the fact that they are primarily seed and grain eaters and find tipped over or incorrectly stored grain in farming areas, pigeons additionally eat insects, garbage and manure. The fact that in a lot of residential and urban regions it's definable common for people to intentionally feed pigeons, makes it easier for the birds to make permanent homes in a specific area.

A pigeon control program that will merge both lethal and non lethal approaches will definable be worth the money--especially when you investigate the damage to health and financial damage that are caused by larger populations of the birds.

If pigeons become a control problem around and on your property, they may be complicated to evacuate, and even harder to prevent from returning. Since damage and destruction from pigeons can be quite major, it is imperative to look for qualified professional help with the initial signs of difficulty. Experienced professionals in your city with a well established set of methods for trapping can help you to control pigeon populations and take the steps to reassure that they won't come back.

How to Get Rid of Pigeons

default How to Get Rid of Pigeons

Pigeons have become public enemy number one as far as pest birds are concerned. The common pigeon also known as a rock dove first came the North America by people from Europe who settled in Canada in the early 1600s. Pigeons that escaped from settlers formed the wild flocks you see in our cities today. These wild birds live among city buildings, bridges, and other man-made structures in the same way their ancestors used to live among cliffs and rocky ledges. Pigeons can live up to 15 years and mate of life. Their homing instincts will bring them back to their same nesting and roosting areas. It has become a widespread problem in cities and suburbs alike. Pigeons cause thousands of dollars a year in cleanup and repair costs to homeowners, building owners, municipal buildings and others.

Pigeons make flimsy nest, and will reuse the location repeatedly, building new nests on top of old ones. Pigeons do not bother to remove the feces of their young, so the nest turns into a hard, pot like mound that gets larger each month. Un-hatched eggs and the mummies of dead nestlings will also get cemented into the nest making it even more of a health hazard. Nest sites are used repeatedly and nesting material is added for each new brood, making for very unsightly displays. A pair may raise 5 or more broods a year. Pigeons do not migrate, but if displace from a nesting area, can return from long distances because of their homing ability.

Controlling Pest Pigeons:

Federal law does not protect feral pigeons and most states do not give them protection. State and local laws should be consulted, however, before any control measures are taken. Some cities are considered bird sanctuaries that provide protection to all species of birds.

Predators:

Hawks and other large animal-eating birds (birds of prey) catch and eat pigeons. The Peregrine Falcon is a bird of prey that lives in some cities and feeds on pigeons. In many cities, however, pigeons have no enemies. One species of falcon, Merlin, eats so many pigeons its scientific name is Falco columbarius (with the "columba-" meaning pigeon) and it was formerly called Pigeon Hawk. Merlins are medium-sized falcons and although they are not very common in cities, you can bet they are preying on pigeons living in open parks near marshes and ponds. In cities where Peregrine Falcons have become established, they catch and eat feral pigeons, often carrying them back to feed to their nestlings. Red-tailed and Cooper's hawks also prey on pigeons in cities and in rural areas.

Habitat Modification:

Elimination of feeding, watering, roosting, and nesting sites is important in long-term pigeon control. Discourage people from feeding pigeons in public areas and clean up spilled grain around elevators, feed mills, and railcar clean-out areas. Eliminate pools of standing water that pigeons use for watering. Modify structures, buildings, and architectural designs to make them less attractive to pigeons.

Pigeon Deterrents:

There are several deterrents on the market that will help to keep pest pigeons off of your property.

Bird Spikes are the most common, economical and easiest to install of the physical deterrents. You simply install the bird spikes on the flat surface that the pigeons are landing on. The bird spikes make it so they can no longer land; thus they will move to another area.

Bird Netting is another physical deterrent that is used to exclude pest pigeons from areas such as warehouses, under eaves of homes, under canopies and other large open areas. A professional installer such as a pest control operator or bird control specialist best installs bird netting.

Shock Systems can also be used on commercial buildings to deter pest pigeons. They will receive a mild shock when they come in contact with the track. This will change their habit of landing on the surface. This is also a product best installed by a professional.

There are other method and products available to deter pest pigeons. It is recommended that if you have a large scale problem that you consult a professional to help determine the best method to get rid of the pest pigeons.
