Banishing Pesky Pests To Create A Lush Lawn

lush lawn 500 Banishing Pesky Pests To Create A Lush LawnIf a once-healthy lawn no longer seems to have the dense, lush surface it had (or perhaps "dense" and "lush" are two words that have never been associated with that specific lawn), now is the time to identify the cause of the problem. A lawn must be hardy to survive weed, insect and disease attacks.

"Pesticides" is the broad term for the insecticides, herbicides and fungicides meant to eliminate or control weeds, nonbeneficial insects, fungus and other diseases. Pesticides may be either synthetic or organic and are used to control a pest-be it a weed, insect or disease-problem that has become out of control.

"It is usually a good idea to look closer at your lawn to catch potential pest problems before they become too difficult to manage," says Parwinder Grewal, Ph.D., the Ohio State University associate professor of entomology, nematology and environment science. "For example, it is too late for grub control when skunks have started digging the turf in search of a nice meal of fully developed juicy grub larvae."

The first step is to identify the pest and the conditions that led to the pest infestation. After making sure the pest population is at a level that would cause unacceptable damage to the lawn, pesticides may be part of the treatment plan. If you choose to use one, keep these tips in mind:

Always read and follow label directions.

Do not apply pesticides on windy days, as they may drift beyond the application area.

Spot treat for weed and insect infestations whenever possible.

Do not apply a pesticide in or near a water source and keep it off pavement or impervious surfaces that could be washed into water bodies.

Stay out of treated areas until the spray has dried, dust has settled or as directed on the product label.

Remember, not all insects are pests. Less than 5 percent of all insects are harmful and most of these have natural predators such as other insects, birds, bats and toads to keep them in check.

Robust lawns are more resistant to pest attacks than lawns under stress. Correcting soil pH, proper fertilization and other management practices that encourage healthy lawn growth are all part of creating a beautiful lawn year after year.

While some homeowners prefer applying lawn care products to control or eliminate pests themselves, others might feel more comfortable hiring a professional to apply the products. Regardless, environmental stewardship should be a top priority when managing and maintaining lawns and landscapes.

"A lawn is the focal point of recreational activity and aesthetic beauty of a property. Carefully and frequently analyzing a lawn for pests, weeds, diseases and insects will help to identify problems before a threshold of damage occurs. Correcting the problems will ensure a healthy lawn, save money on costly repairs and enhance the quality and appearance of a lawn," says John Gibson, director of operations for Swingle Tree, Lawn & Christmas Decor, Denver, Colo., and president of the Professional Landcare Network, a national association for professional landscape contractors.

Gibson is also a member of Project EverGreen, a national non-profit organization formed to raise the awareness of the environmental, economic and lifestyle benefits of landscapes and promote the significance of those who preserve and enhance green spaces at home, work and play.

Learn How to Kill Moles

mole trap

I know it sounds unpleasant but if you want to learn how to kill moles, then you probably have a pretty good reason. That reason is probably due to the damage that moles can create in your lawn. Not only are the mole hills unsightly but the tunnels the little rodents excavate are dangerous to those walking or playing in your yard. So, just how do you go about killing moles in your lawn you may be asking? Basically, the methods fall into two categories. One involves trapping the moles and the other involves poisoning them. These are also the most effective methods to kill moles in your lawn.

Some may suggest drowning them but that method is largely ineffective. When it comes to traps there are a variety of traps to choose from. One of which is the scissor trap. The scissor trap is placed in an active tunnel and when the mole passes between the jaws and hits the trigger the scissor jaws snap tight killing and trapping the mole. The harpoon style mole trap is another popular choice. The harpoon is best used in a shallow tunnel. As the mole passes between the tunnel bottom and the trigger it pushes up on the trigger which then activates the harpoons impaling the mole.

Some other types of traps include tube styles, pinchers and chokers. When it comes to poisoning moles, methods range from creative uses of vehicle exhaust fumes to off the shelf poisons and baits. Using your car exhaust may sound fun but it is very ineffective and difficult to set up. If you enjoy having your neighbours point and whisper about you then by all means try it out. But, if you seriously want to use poisons or baits to rid your lawn of moles stay away from your tailpipe. Poisons can be effective but they will probably require multiple applications and other duties like watering them in.

Get Rid of Moles Now

get rid of moles

OK, so suddenly there are many tunnels all over your yard. What could be underneath the very soil you walk on? Relax. It's probably just a mole problem. Or don't relax! These creatures are very destructive creatures, and even though they're so good at hiding, you'll be able to clearly see the damage they do to your yard, what with all the visible tunnels and hills showing up. Get rid of them before they go on with what they're doing and succeed in destroying your garden or yard entirely!

get rid of molesHere are the few and very easy steps you should take to get rid of moles, those highly destructive varmints that ruin all your dreams and plans for a healthy yard:

  1. Moles love grub larvae so much that they will tear out your entire yard or garden for it. So what you need to do is to rid your yard of all the grubs you can find. They're the reason why they are in your yard. Remove the cause, and you'll remove the effect as well.
  2. Determine which of the tunnels are active. You'll know this by doing some damage to each of the tunnels. If the damage is repaired within the course of 24 hours, then, yep, that tunnel is active all right.
  3. After you have gathered which tunnels are active, purchase traps and put them in the active tunnels based on their directions. Check up on the traps regularly, and when you succeed in trapping the mole, remove it.
  4. Using a hose, try to get rid of them by flooding their tunnels. Put the hose pipe's end into either of the determined active tunnels. Turn on the water and carefully pay attention as you wait for the it to escape out of the flooded tunnels.

Just so you know, the mole traps may kill the mole, but if you don't want that, you should check the traps often so you can get the varmint out and set it free. Of course, you're supposed to set it free somewhere far away, so you won't see it again in your yard.

You can't take the presence of moles in your yard lightly, unless if you don't mind them crawling around doing much damage to your property. If you don't want that to happen, follow the steps mentioned above and get rid of moles now.

How to Get Rid of Moles

Got Moles? Easy ID Tips

The first step in ridding your lawn and garden of ground moles is to identify that the pest you have is truly a mole. There are a few distinct identification tips you can follow to make sure you are chasing a mole.

Most people who see visible damage to their lawn or garden assume they have moles. Before you go after the moles, make sure that's really the rodent problem you have.

Physical Characteristics
The Eastern Mole is the most common. These moles are underground rodents that are 6.5 - 7 inches long at maturity. They are fur covered, with tails. The forefeet are large and are wider than they are long. The hind feet are small. The eyes and ears are concealed in the fur. Unless you trap a mole, you are likely never to see one. They do not come above the ground unless forced to.

Eating Habits
A common misconception about moles is that they eat roots and plants. This is not true, as moles do not eat vegetation. Moles only eat grubs and earthworms. However, moles will damage plants by tunneling through the root zone and even popping plants up out of the ground. Moles eat 70-100% of their body weight per day - they constantly tunnel to find new sources of worms to eat.

Where They Live
As stated, moles live underground. They feed by burrowing just below the surface of the soil, making unsightly raised tunnels or runs. However, they also burrow deep depending on the weather conditions. When they burrow deep, they push the excess soil up, thus creating mounds. These mounds resemble volcanoes and can show up anywhere. Often pocket gophers have similar tunneling traits with the exception that their mounds are kidney shaped and are usually in a line.

The Apple Test
An easy test to see if you have a mole versus a pocket gopher or chipmunk is to test it with an apple.
1.Find an active tunnel.
2.Cut an apple in half.
3.Place the apple on the tunnel.
4.Cover the apple with a bucket or flower pot (upside down).
5.Wait a couple of days.
6. If the apple has not been eaten - you have a mole!

Getting Rid of Moles
There are basically three methods to get rid of moles. One is to use a mole repellent, such as Molexit. A second method is to trap the mole - the easy set mole eliminator trap is proven effective. The third method is to poison the moles - I don't recommend this for safety reasons.
