I am in the process of buying a house but the home inspector found some mud tubes. The sellers are willing to have the termites and carpenter ants treated. Can the termites come back? what should I do walk away from this deal?

I have purchased two homes with an "issue" like this that I chose to let the seller "fix". They were not fixed satisfactorily and were just the tip of the iceberg once we moved in & discovered all of the other problems that had been fixed/masked. My neighbor bought a home that was free & clear on the termite inspection, went to replace (just after closing) a window that he didn't want to haggle over during negotiation & found out his entire exterior wall at that window was infested & required replacement- not a fun or cheap task. NO evidence of termites was found under the house. My point is, you should walk away. There is too much smoke for there not to be a fire. If you HAVE to have this house, you need serious stipulations on how it is corrected- ie-you get to pick the contractor, etc. or you get a serious sum knocked off of the price. Best of luck to you.

how do you get rid of carpenter ants inside?

You need to find out where their nest is. Look for spots where there are a lot of wood shavings and most likely you will find the nest. An exterminator is best, but if you're like me you don't want poison in your house. Use boric acid. sweeten it with sugar as a trap. The ants will eat it, bring it to the nest and puke it up there to share. This does work it's just that it will take a while to work. If you actually find where the nest is, than you've got it pretty easy. You can just buy over the counter poison for them and spray them to death in their nest.

i've noticed since the weather has started to warm that there are ants coming into my house, i havent figured out from where but they seem to congregate in my sink, they ants are black and that's about all i can say about them, they don't travel to any other parts of my house just my kitchen sink. i saw some answers to natural ant removal so i will try them but i just want to make sure they are just regular ants and not carpenter ants

You'll know if they bite you they are carpenter ants.

I have a carpenter ant nest in my house. I know that it's in my house and what wall it is behind.

Everything I've read says lay out poison or insert poison into the walls. I have an extremely curious cat, who will certainly get into any poison. How do I kill the ants without killing him too?

I have been doing pest control for over 20 years and it would be doubtful that I could kill a pet purposely with the products used for ant control....just follow label direction on usage and the cat will be fine. First thing would be to make sure they are carpenter ants, there are a number of ants that can infest inside of walls, know what type of ant they are determines what to do for them.

The over the counter ant "traps" won't be effective for carpenter ants. There are a couple of baits designed just for carpenter ants you can get over the web, a pest control supply store or one of the do it your self type pest stores. One is Advance carpenter Ant granules..I have treated for colonies where I had no idea where the nest actually was and it seems to always stop them (for outside use) The other is MaxForce Carpenter Ant gel, I haven't used this product, but the pros that I know who have say it works as well as the granules and it can be used inside. Neither will have an odor or fumes so it shouldn't be an issue to your pet.

Bought a bottle of Termidore liquid concentrate and was wondering about mixing and application for use on carpenter ants? Any exterminators out there?

Insecticides are required by law to give you directions about mixing and application.

If yours are missing, go back to the store and buy another bottle. Keep the receipt so you can return the new unused bottle. Get the directions from that and the email address of the company. They will send you new directions to keep with your bottle.

I need natural remedies for killing and preventing carpenter ants for getting into my house. I'll use this for outdoors as I have a remedy for indoor use and not outdoor usage.

Carpenter ants are a wood destroying insect similar to termites. However the ants don't eat the wood they excavate it. They should be taken as seriously as termites though. I reccomend you go with one of the synthetic products available and avoid a natural remedy. The products sold today are so low in toxicity now you don't really have to avoid them, just follow the label instructions. Natural remedies can take a very long time and may not destroy the colony. This is only a concern if you own the house. For an owner I suggest Advance Carpenter ant bait or Termidor SC, you can probably find them on ebay. For a renter I suggest Talstar One or any Talstar liquid. For Termidor and Talstar you can use a store bought spray can, there is one at Lowes for $12.00.

About two years ago we built an extension onto our home, which was to serve as a large kitchen. Since then, everytime we get warm weather, we get carpenter ants everywhere! Could it be because the kitchen is on the second floor and is supported by wood beams that are untreated? They are so bad and we don't know what to do.

Carpenter Ants can be exterminated via either do-it-yourself methods or by calling in Professional Pest Controllers. Regardless of the method chosen, several steps need to be taken:

1. Attempt to locate the nest (they tend to swarm around lights and windows, but check all wooden structures, especially sills or where plumbing is installed. Tap the wood to check if it is 'hollow' and listen for any 'movements')

2. Use insecticides or ant baits e.g. 'Demon WP' (a wetable powder whose active ingredient is Cypermethrin) or 'Suspend' (a liquid spray whose active ingredient is Deltamethrin). An ant bait called 'Advance Carpenter Ant Bait' may also be used outside to prevent populations from multiplying outside the house. However, ant baits may not be very effective in that the worker (or forager) ants tend not to take enough of the poison back to the nest. Note: Liquid insecticides are not normally recommended for use in wall voids - here it is better to drill a series of small holes and dust with an insecticide like 'Delta Dust'. Take care around electrical sockets. If in doubt - call in Professional Pest Controllers.
