How to get rid of carpenter ants?

Yesterday some fruit punch got spilled and not cleaned and within hours 20 or so carpenter ants were all over it. I only notice them once in a while. What can I do to get rid of them and find out where they are coming from?

get a couple packages of ant traps. they work really well (not the cheap ones)
