Question by sahjmom: What makes fleas attracted to one household member or pet and not others?
Help! I keep getting bitten by fleas, whereas my husband and son haven't had any. Also, one cat is attracting the fleas and another isn't. Why?

Health. Heathly cats attract less fleas than stressed out cats or ones with their immune systems working overtime.

For you, try taking a B complex vitamin, fleas are put off by the B complex and will have a better chance of leaving you alone. You can also try rubbing some brewers yeast into the affected cat's coat, it's a flea repellant and won't hurt her if she eats some of it. They just had that suggestion in the latest magazine our health food store puts out.

Beside infesting and sucking off blood from your pets, flea bites on people too. Among all insects bites, human flea bites are one of the most commonly seen.

Human can be bitten by a variety of fleas namely the dog flea, cat flea or the human flea. Fleas use their jaws to cut through the skin and then excretes their saliva containing enzymes and anticoagulant. The anticoagulant will prevents blood from clotting and enable the fleas to suck on the blood. The enzymes excreted cause all the allergic reactions seen on people.

What do flea bites look like?

Human flea bites generally occur along the ankles and lower portions of the legs. A flea bite can usually be described as a red spot accompanied by a halo of redness that can last for several hours depending on one's reaction to it. It may causes a slight irritation or itch in some people while others with extreme allergies will sometimes break out into hives and have excessive swelling. Children tend to have more sensitive skin and as such, flea bites seen in children are usually more severe than in adults. (See Flea Bite Pictures )

Home treatment For Flea Bites On People

Before you run to your family doctor to seek medical treatment, here are some home treatment for flea bites that you may try especially if it's just a mild case of allergy.

1.Wash affected area with a mild antiseptic soap or detergent2.Put an ice pack over the affect area. This will help in reducing swelling and inflammation3.Apply some calamine lotion to relieve the itch4.A mild steroid cream like hydrocortisone which are easily available from a local pharmacy will be useful in relieving the swellings and itch more rapidly.

As always, prevention is better than cure. Fleas breed at a rapid rate and getting rid of fleas can be an uphill task. Flea control requires an integrated plan, which involve treating your pets, entire house, backyards and gardens. All these require both great efforts and persistence but will be all worthwhile when you get to finally declare your home flea free and bites free!

Fleas and Ticks

Article by Susan Koranki

Flea and tick season is here!

Most of us love summer, but if your dog is bothered by those summertime pests - fleas and ticks, he won't be having much fun.

Itchy skin, excessive scratching and the possibility of serious illnesses such as Lyme Disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, are just a few of the annoying (and dangerous) accompaniments to a flea or tick problem.

Fleas - Fleas are very tiny, black creatures which can sometimes be seen crawling through your dog's fur. They're easiest to spot around the eyes, ears and on the tummy. If your pooch is allergic to the elements of flea-saliva he, or she, could develop flea-allergy dermatitis. This is a condition which causes itchy, irritated, sometimes weepy skin, excessive scratching and the loss of hair in patches which can sometimes be fairly large.

One flea can bite as many as 400 times in one day! If your poor pup had a whole community of these little pest crawling all over him, imagine how uncomfortable he would be!

Ticks - Ticks can vary in size from very tiny ones, about the size of a pin-head, to some that can be as large as a kernel of corn - especially when engorged with blood. They have tear-drop shaped bodies, 8 legs and can be black, brown, tan or a dark-red color.

When it comes to nasty parasites such as fleas and ticks, prevention is definitely better than cure and there are many different products on the market that have been designed to repel, kill or prevent fleas and ticks from making their home in your dog's fur.

Products such as flea collars, sprays or powders are not usually very effective. The best, most fast-acting and longest-lasting protection comes from the popular topical liquids (such as Advantage or Frontline Plus) which are applied to your puppy's skin on a monthly basis.

You need to consider your dog's level of infestation and choose carefully when deciding which flea, or flea and tick medicine to use. Advantage works very quickly (killing all fleas on your pet within 12 hours) but only kills hatched fleas. Frontline Plus works almost as fast (killing all fleas and ticks on your pup within 18 hours) but kills adult fleas, eggs and larvae PLUS it kills ticks too.

Flea and tick preventatives such as Advantage or Frontline Plus are very safe and effective if used according to the manufacturers instructions. However, as with any kind of medication or drug you need to be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging very carefully.

Here are a few tips to help you kill your puppy's fleas and ticks safely :

1. Make sure your pup is at least the min. age recommended by the manufacturer for the particular product you're using.

2. Pay close attention to the directions and be particularly careful to adhere to the weight guidelines. Never use a medication meant for dogs on cats - or the other way around!

3. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the liquid and avoid it coming into contact with your skin or eyes.

4. Store the medicines somewhere safe and cool, away from children or other pets.

5. If you think your puppy seems unwell or is acting in an unusual way after treatment, seek advice from your veterinarian promptly.

Once you have your puppy free of fleas and ticks, it's usually a good idea to treat their bedding, blankets, crate, carpets and soft furnishings as well. Any live fleas in your house will continue to multiply and jump back onto your little pup. The flea and tick medication you used on your puppy will kill these little parasites, but the whole process will be faster if you eliminate as many of them as possible the first time around.

You can buy several different kinds of sprays or 'bombs' (pressurized canisters of chemicals that will kill fleas) and one treatment should be enough, unless your pup had a severe flea problem. If that's the case, it wouldn't hurt to do it twice or call in a professional pest control company to treat your home.

Occasionally you may experience an itchy discomfort in the rear of your head. It could be it's that all new shampoo you're using, or maybe it's the warmth. It would be interesting, though a little gross, to point to a single factor why your head may be itching: perhaps it's because of a head louse, or 20 of them. As per the Annual Review of Entomology by Ian Burgess, over 12 million people in the United States alone experience louse infestation, and without any head lice treatment for instance lice shampoo, they'll find themselves scratching their heads red.

Before getting to anything though, what exactly is a head louse anyway? A head louse, or Pediculus humanus capitis, is a wingless bug of the order Phthiraptera and is defined as an obligate ectoparasite. Meaning that, this is a parasitic organism that nourishes on the blood of their host. With no that blood, it'll die. As a result it makes one heck of an endeavor to keep on its host forever. Linked to its thorax are six small but sturdy limbs which contain claws: these claws are used to cling to the hair of their host, which in such cases is a person's head.

Whenever a head louse links by itself to the hair of someone, it waits there until it's time to go after the person's blood. Such a thing happens four to five periods daily. Precisely what a head louse actually does is it gnaws past the skin of the individual and injects its saliva, containing substances that obstruct blood clotting, letting it to feast uninterruptedly.

Any component of a typical person's scalp could be colonized by head lice; nonetheless, a head louse will have a preference for the part of the nape of the neck along with the space behind a person's ears. They also shy away from light, and will definitely move toward dark-colored places within close proximity. Human beings commonly acquire a louse infestation, or what's often called Pediculosis capitis, through close contact amongst individuals.

Any time a head louse nourishes, this will cause you to actually feel that itchy sensation you're feeling upon your head. This may trigger welts, inflammation, and can also even lead to secondary infection. To avoid this, anybody can complete head lice treatment to take out those irritating head lice.

There are several solutions to heal Pediculosis capititis. The first strategy could be hands-on nitpicking, which is actually principally going through a person's hair and taking away each louse manually. This is often a difficult approach which may need a stretch of time and plenty of exertion. Many people, who don't have the time or the perseverance for doing this, simply shave their heads to take out these pests.

Lastly, one method that looks like it's becoming more popular is the lice shampoo treatment. These hair shampoos are specially created with particular protease enzymes. These enzymes are similar to the ones commonly found in the insects themselves, and work by driving a louse to molt or hatch from an egg too rapidly, damaging its exoskeleton and eradicating it. Considering that the enzyme may be found in the louse itself, there is certainly no danger of it possessing a resistance. This cure, without a doubt, is demonstrating to be very effective and is gaining quite the following.

Jennifer Duggan is an entomologist that knows exactly how destructive lice might be, and knows how effective head lice treatment can be, as he has used them on his children.
