Question by Cheryl W: Natural pest control for my vegetable plants?
I was looking for a homemade remedy to keep the bad insects away from my vegetable plants. I noticed some aphids on my tomatoes, and the ladybugs can't seem to eat them fast enough.
I saw something on TV once made with hot peppers blended with other stuff, but I can't remember. I'd like to stay organic and food-safe without having to buy a pesticide (don't want to harm the ladybugs-just repel the "bad guys").

Soapy water works. I've got aphids on my tomato plants as well. You can either constantly spray them off with a strong stream of water or mix a little bit of dishwashing soap with water and spray your plant. It works well and is not harmful to the plant, however I wouldn't do it in the heat of the day.

Question by Deekotatonic: How can a roach survive with having half its body missing and still able to move?
Weird I know, but the other day I noticed this roach outside, so I threw some rock at the little fellow and it somehow tore half of it's body apart and as it was laying there; it suddenly started moving again and even found the power to move away a few inches at a very quick speed. How is this possible?

Insects have very primitive brains. Even if the brain is severed, there's enough of its nervous sytem to keep it moving. It might live up to a week, dying only because it starves.

What did that roach over do to you?

Question by JENNJENN: Is it safe to use Raid roach bombs in a apartment where a 10 mth old baby lives?
We have had some hurricanes hit our area last year and the roaches came and keep getting worse and worse. We bought some Raid roach bombs to use in our apartment but we are scared that the chemicals left over might affect our children ages 10, 3, and 10 mths..Please help we are desperate to get rid of them.

If you get the dry air bombs it is usually okay. They take about 2 hours to clear out (after how ever long it takes for the bomb to work).

A tip though is clear out any food you have in your house. I wouldn't recommend eating anything that was exposed to a bomb. Also leave all cabinets, dishwasher, oven, refrigerator, etc... open so there isn't any place for them to hid. Clean all surfaces (counters and floors) well after the bomb, vacuum carpet too. Read the package instructions first. They will usually say if it is safe for babies or not, how long it needs to air out before returning, etc..

I just moved into an apartment in September and right before I moved in my landlord said she found roaches in the place so she wanted to bomb them first. Well she didn't open any cabinets or anything and they were all still alive when I moved in. It totally freaked me out.

If you are looking for natural chemical free ways to get rid of roaches look at the link I posted below for some tips.

Question by Kevin G: How long will roach poison stay effective after being sprayed, and how much for a barrier?
Two questions merged into one!

1. After spraying, how long will roach poison stay effective on surfaces?

2. How much can be used as a good chemical barrier against cockroaches, or at least against a big one? Spray an area of 2 x 24-36 in.-ish?

Answer by Lynn H
I live in Nevada where it is very dry. So I buy a gallon and to spray inside outside and all around the walls of my property & it lasts for 2 months. I think it would depend on the rainfall in your area. Basically if you spray and it rains, it is like washing your car - you gotta do it again once it dries up - unless it is specifically used inside areas where the rain does not touch.

How To Manage Dog Fleas At Home

Article by Daryl Chapman

Do you own a pet dog? Anxious about fleas? Fret no more. This article is all about dog fleas, its causes, symptoms and certain effective household treatments that you can opt to try to get rid of these ferocious little critters.

Dog flea is very dreadful. Fleas are yucky. It can bring about mild to severe itching and scratching to its host. They are not easy to eliminate. They measure about 1.5 To 3.3 Mm long. They do not have wings. They suck on blood. There are about 2,000 species of fleas, but the most common is the Ctenocephalides felis, also known as the cat flea. This flea generally affects dog breeds.

What Causes Dog Fleas?

Did you know that although your dog stays at home, it can still get fleas? Yes, your pet can get fleas particularly in a hot and humid weather. Since fleas are so miniscule, they can enter small screens or windows. But the most common way of transmission is by means of direct contact with other pets.

Dogs and cats are very likely to be infested with fleas. Tragically, human beings are not spared. When a pet is not at home or is already gone, fleas can plague humans. With no pets in, fleas are in a hunt for a new host and this is when they start to attack humans. They normally bite humans at the waist area, ankles, and armpits.

Symptoms

So, how can you tell if your pet is suffering from fleas? It is simple to identify if a dog is affected with flea. Notice the dog's itching and scratching becoming worse. Then the affected skin of your canine friend may turn red and inflamed as a result of flea bites and the repeated scratching and biting. Also, flea dirt is observable on your pet's skin, on its sheets and bed-dings, or in other areas where your pet frequently hangs out. Flea dirt looks like small dark specks. Flea dirt is a mixture of desiccated blood and flea debris.

To know if your canine friend is affected by fleas, run through your pet's special comb. If you catch tiny black insects finding its way back to your dog's fur then it is confirmed. Your dog is infested with fleas.

Is It Possible To Treat Fleas Indoors?

After confirming that your dog has fleas, do not lengthen your dog's suffering. Do something about these annoying little critters. Following are some of the most conventional household treatments for dog fleas.

Avon Product - Skin So SoftAccording to one research conducted in the University of Florida in Gainesville, this special bath oil, is an exemplary flea repellent product. Simply soak your canine friend in the solution of Avon's Skin So Soft. Your dog will absolutely be relieved in an instant.

RosemaryRosemary has anti-inflammatory effects. It also helps stimulate the growth of hair. With constant scratching and biting, your dog can suffer mild to severe hair loss. Restore your dog's natural hair and use rosemary consistently.

Brewer's YeastThis commercial product is not yet proven on the other hand according to many pet owners this product can help keep fleas away.

For sure, it is heartbreaking to see your dog suffer because of flea plague. Yes, fleas in dogs are very endemic. But there is something that you can do to manage the condition. Follow the tips above and your pet will be relieved from fleas in no time.

Natural Pest Control 2

Around one third of the food ever grown is destroyed by pests or pathogens. Part of the food security challenge is to grow food using less inputs, such pesticides. Synthetic pesticides are a formidable weapon against maurading pests and may ensure a more certain harvest; equally, biological control using natural predators can render chemicals unnecessary. But there are relatively few studies that directly compare both techniques at the farm level. Hence, Professor Jane Memmott and colleagues at the University of Bristol decided to look at the differences in biodiversity between conventional and organic farms at the farm-scale, and then see which was better at controlling pests.
