TERMITES………………………..?

We just found out that we have termites. We have a 99 yr old house & just painted, not sided (not sure if that matters). Saw termites in a few different places tonight. We need to be doing some deckwork soon & hubby is afraid of stirring up a nest.
Would it be best to call an exterminator or are there ways to get rid of them and their nests (if they have them) by ourselves?
Any info would be great!!

You are right to ask before beginning works as it it often much easier to control termites if they haven't been disturbed. Find a competent inspector so you'll know what type(s) are attacking, where they are, why they are there, how bad things are and what choices you have to manage them.
There's no such thing as a free inspection, they'll just add the cost to the treatment and often just want to spray or bait and don't really look hard at your needs. Companies offering free inspections have to win lots of jobs.

It's probably not so bad, probably subterraneans and likely to be well manageable. So don't be rushed, choose carefully and hold off on any works until it is all done.

Despite what you might read by people who want to sell you things, controlling termites is rarely a safe DIY process and if you do go it alone, you're betting the house on your good luck.

Edit: A reputable exterminator cannot afford (be expected) to provide a lifetime guarantee unless it is as part of an ongoing contractual relationship where you keep on paying to cover the work (and the insurance). Be wary of people who over-promise and under-deliver.
